Impact of Melt Flow Index (MFI) on HDPE/LDPE Extrusion & Film Blowing | JM ENTERPRISE

Impact of Melt Flow Index (MFI) on HDPE/LDPE Extrusion & Film Blowing | JM ENTERPRISE

In the world of plastic conversion, the Melt Flow Index (MFI) is more than just a number on a Technical Data Sheet (TDS)—it is a vital indicator of how a resin will behave under heat and pressure. At JM ENTERPRISE, we emphasize the importance of selecting the correct MFI to ensure seamless production and superior product quality.

1. What is Melt Flow Index (MFI)?

MFI measures the ease of flow of a thermoplastic polymer. It is defined as the weight of polymer (in grams) that flows through a standard capillary die in 10 minutes under specific temperature and load conditions.

  • Low MFI: Higher molecular weight, higher viscosity (thicker melt), and higher melt strength.
  • High MFI: Lower molecular weight, lower viscosity (runnier melt), and easier flow.

2. MFI in the Film Blowing Process

For film blowing (typically utilizing LDPE, LLDPE, or HDPE), the MFI directly dictates the stability of the bubble:

  • Low MFI (0.1 - 1.0 g/10 min): Resins in this range provide excellent Melt Strength. This is crucial for maintaining a stable bubble at the die head. It is the preferred choice for heavy-duty sacks, industrial liners, and agricultural mulch films.
  • High MFI (> 2.0 g/10 min): While these resins are easier to process at high speeds, they have lower melt strength. The bubble can become unstable or wobble at high draw-down ratios. These are often used as blending components to improve surface gloss and reduce energy consumption.

3. MFI in the Extrusion Process (Pipes and Cables)

In the extrusion of HDPE pipes or cable jacketing, MFI influences both the internal machine pressure and the final physical properties:

  • Extrusion Pressure: A very low MFI increases the back-pressure in the extruder barrel. While this ensures a dense, strong product, it requires robust motors and precise temperature control to prevent melt fracture or surface defects.
  • Surface Finish: The right MFI ensures a smooth, mirror-like finish on pipes. If the MFI is mismatched with the screw speed, it can result in a sharkskin texture or uneven wall thickness.
  • Mechanical Integrity: Generally, lower MFI resins offer superior Environmental Stress Crack Resistance (ESCR) and impact strength, which are critical for infrastructure applications.
